COVAW with support from African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) implemented a two-year project titled ‘Enhancing Access to Justice for Sexual and Gender Based Violence Victims, with Intellectual Disabilities in Nairobi, Narok and Kiambu Counties.’
The project was implemented between 2019 and 2020, and had the following objectives:
- To enhance public knowledge and awareness on the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities, in relation to SGBV through legal aid clinics in Kiambu, Nairobi and Narok Counties.
- To provide court representation, psychosocial care to survivors of SGBV with intellectual disabilities.
- To advocate for an inclusive legal and policy SGBV framework on persons with intellectual disabilities using the evidence generated from the legal clinics and court processes.
- To strengthen the capacity of criminal justice actors to respond appropriately to SGBV cases of intellectually challenged women and girls.
