Advancing Sexual Reproductive Health Rights in Kenya

Project Overview

The Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW), in partnership with the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR), and Equality Now, is spearheading a project to advocate for the lifting of Kenya’s reservations under the Maputo Protocol. This initiative seeks to advance Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) in Kenya through legal reforms, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative action among stakeholders, ensuring women and girls access their full rights as outlined in the Protocol.

August 2024 – June 2025

Project Objectives
  • Knowledge Sharing and Advocacy:
    • Equip women’s rights organizations with the knowledge and tools to evaluate and amplify the implementation of the Maputo Protocol.
  • Policy and Legal Engagement:
    • Engage policymakers and justice actors to prioritize the Protocol in judicial and policy decisions.
  • Movement Building:
    • Foster coordinated action among civil society organizations (CSOs) to collectively advocate for the lifting of reservations under the Maputo Protocol.
Expected Outcomes
  • Expanded knowledge and implementation of the Maputo Protocol among justice actors and civil society stakeholders.
  • Increased demand for SRHR from the government and strengthened CSO advocacy through collaborative action.
  • Lifting of the reservations on Article 14 (2)(c) of the Protocol, ensuring access to sexual reproductive health rights of women and girls.
