Jane Serwanga is a seasoned legal professional and passionate advocate for women’s rights, currently serving as a Board Member at the Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW). With nearly two decades of experience in the legal field, she brings a wealth of expertise in gender justice, democratic governance, and human rights advocacy across Kenya and the region.
Jane has spent over 10 years advancing women’s rights through litigation, policy advocacy, legal research, and strategic programming focused on combating systemic inequality. Her experience in democratic governance spans over six years, with a strong focus on electoral assistance, including technical support to national and regional electoral bodies, gender mainstreaming of electoral processes, and promoting inclusive citizen participation.
She has led initiatives to prevent and respond to violence against women in elections (VAWIE), trained judiciary and civil society actors on electoral gender-based violence, and contributed to legal reforms supporting greater representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in governance.
Jane’s work also includes contributing to regional policy development, research on child marriage, and advocacy around the implementation of the Maputo Protocol. She has held leadership roles at UNDP and UN Women and has collaborated with organizations such as FIDA-Kenya, Equality Now, and the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria.
At COVAW, Jane leverages her vast experience in law, governance, and women’s rights to support the organization’s mission of advancing gender equality, promoting access to justice, and ending violence against women and girls.
