Ending FGM in Narok County titled Ailepu (Maa for Arise)
COVAW, with support from The Girl Generation (TGG): Africa Led Movement (ALM) Programme, is implementing a five-year project titled “Ailepu,” which means “Arise” in the “Maa” language. This project aims to significantly reduce the practice of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Narok County, specifically in Suswa Ward, Narok East Sub County, by fostering positive changes in social attitudes among community members toward ending FGM/C.
The project is centered on continuous learning and adaptation, focusing on community-led initiatives for sustainability. COVAW is implementing this project in 13 villages: Oloshaiki, Inkoinierito, Inkilongosi, Oltepesi, Kipise, Enariboo, Olepolos Sintakara, Nkampaani, Orngoswa, Enkiloriti, Enaropa O’ngila, and Olasiti.
Project intended outcomes
COVAW intends to achieve the following outcomes;- Reduction of the prevalence of FGC in Narok County from the current rate of 51%, according to the KDHS report 2022.
- Enhanced application of a gender transformative approach on addressing social norms related to knowledge, attitudes, and practices of FGC.
- Establishment of robust and influential women-led grassroots movements active in driving end FGC campaigns in Narok County..
- Increased number of health workers spearheading or supporting end of FGC campaigns in Narok County.
- Stronger organizations in terms of personnel skills, systems, structures and policies which will ensure efficiency in financial management, operations, mobilisation of resources and accountability to all stakeholders.
- Increased retention of girls in primary school as a result of reduction in FGC prevalence.
