About Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW)
COVAW is a national non-profit organization dedicated to women’s rights, established in 1995. The organization was formed following a workshop conducted by Women in Law and Development in Africa (Wildaf), which identified two critical issues: Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and the insufficient representation of women in key leadership positions.
The workshop highlighted the necessity of forming a coalition to address these challenges, which led to the establishment of COVAW. Since its inception, COVAW has focused on breaking the silence on violence against women and girls and has worked to influence the policy, legal, and practice landscape in Kenya and beyond.
COVAW envisions a society where women and girls have equal rights and freedoms and can thrive in safe environments. Its mission is to advocate for women’s and girls’ rights to be free from all forms of violence. COVAW is guided by core values of respect, integrity, solidarity, and a commitment to improving the lives of its primary target group: women and girls.
